My Mediated Existence is the blog of one Alex Beckstead, a documentary filmmaker living and working in San Francisco, CA. Since 2000, Alex has worked at Kikim Media. His most recent credit with Kikim was Associate Producer, co-Writer and Producer-Africa Segments of ENDING AIDS: THE SEARCH FOR A VACCINE, which will premiere on PBS in December 2005. Other recent credits include Associate Producer and Sound Recordist for several companion documentaries for the DVD release of HBO's DEADWOOD and Associate Producer of the 2002 PBS special MUHAMMAD: LEGACY OF A PROPHET.
Prior to teaming with Kikim, Alex was the producer, director and editor of TRAILER PARK BLUES, which received support from ITVS (LInCS, 1999) and was co-produced with KUED-TV, Salt Lake City's flagship PBS station. The film screened at the 2002 Film Arts Foundation Film Festival, and aired on PBS stations in over 20 markets nationwide. He holds an Honors B.A. in Film Studies from the University of Utah, where he wrote his thesis on the history and application of cinema verité techniques, and where he made the short documentary SXE. That film was voted Best Film Documentary at the 1998 Utah Short Film and Video Festival, and was an official selection of the 1999 Sundance Film Festival. Alex was also selected to participate in the 2003 CPB/PBS Producers Academy Workshop at WGBH in Boston.
